Herne Hill Youth Cycling Club: April / May  midweek chain gang

Spring is here now, blossom everywhere, birds busy building nests, the trees in leaf, in short, too nice to be holed up in an old warehouse furiously pedalling and getting no where. Roller session have finished and will restart in the autumn, in the meantime we will introduce for the first time a Youth 'Chain Gang'.

A 'Chain Gang' is a fast race paced training ride which will help you improve not only your group riding skills but also your endurance and speed. The ride will introduce you to the concept of riding 'through and off' with ample opportunity to practise.  The hard riding part of the ride will be approx 30 to 40 minutes long, but don't be put off, you will be able to build yourself up to this.

Closely following the ‘standard’ winter chain gang route, see attached map, the ride will  start at the Velodrome at 6.40 pm, those living closer to Elmers End can meet us there (bus stop by the Skoda Garage) at 7 pm, for briefing before setting off at 7.15 behind the main Dulwich Wednesday group.

The youth will hang on to the back of the adult riders for as long as possible, once ‘dropped’ will probably split into 2 groups, I will accompany the faster group, Bill will hold the younger group together.

Over the weeks I would expect to see the faster riders keeping up with the adults for most of the evening.

The fast group will ride out a roundabout near Knockholt, and return back along the A21 to Bromley. On the return they will pick up the more civilised riders, together  we will follow the main road back to Bromley and ultimately the Velodrome.

The ride has 2 end/meeting points, 1st is the junction of Masons Hill/Kentish Way  (A21 and B 228) with an eta of 8.45  and 2nd at the Velodrome, by approx 9.15pm

As usual....rules.

This ride is by invitation only……we have to be confident you can complete it
You must be a member of a British Cycling and a BC  recognised club
Wear correct clothing…..the evenings can get cold; no ruck sacks, this is fast ride not a holiday.
Drink and small amount of food, fig rolls, bananas, energy gloop etc
Although the roads are street lit, you must have lights (working), it’s the law.
Do a proper full bike inspection, don’t expect sympathy if we have to adjust your brakes cos you forgot.
Spare inner tube- that fits and works
If you haven’t filled one in and given it to me within the last 3 months fill in a  Parental Consent form
Telephone number of your rescuer/parent/guardian/carer written on a piece of paper in your back pocket

Rescuers/parents/guardians/carers- you need to be available to rescue your charge should it be necessary.
